Brief History: Faisalabad (formerly called Lyallpur) is a major industrial city of Pakistan. It was established in 1880 by Capt Poham Young and Sir James Broadwood Lyall and the new town was named Lyallpur after surname of Sir James B. Lyall. Faisalabad is also called “The Manchester of Asia” because of to its textile industry. Faisalabad has a strong industrial base including textiles, jewelry, and pharmaceuticals. The textile industry of Faisalabad has a major share of the textile export market of Pakistan. The famous University of Agriculture is also located in Faisalabad.
Faisalabad is a well planned city. Its design was based on the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain, with eight bazaars originating from a large Clock Tower in the centre. If looked from the air even today, these bazaars depict the stripes of Union Jack.
In 1977, the name of the city and the District was changed to “Faisalabad” (City of Faisal), in honour of the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. In 1985, the district was upgraded to a division.
Faisalabad has the honour that Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah visited the city in 1943 and addressed a huge gathering of over 2 million people at Dhobi Ghat Ground.

Faisalabad M3 Motorway Interchange

The Faisalabad Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar). Faisalabad is a well planned city. Its design was based on the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain, with eight bazaars originating from a large Clock Tower in the centre. If looked from the air even today, these bazaars depict the stripes of Union Jack. The Clock Tower was inaugurated in 1905.

The Gumti (Water Fountain), Faisalabad. The Gumti (Water Fountain) is a monument in Faisalabad which was built during the early twentieth century and was a general meeting place of the city folk for local town meetings. Today the structure still exists and has been turned into a roundabout for traffic with the water fountain still working at the centre.

Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad. Iqbal Stadium is a cricket ground which has a seating capacity of 18,000. The first test match in this venue was played between Pakistan and India on 16-21 October 1978.

The Chenab Club, Faisalabad. Chenab Club was established the first decade of the 20th century for the entertainment of the British officers serving in Lyallpur.

University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad has an old history. The Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute, Lyallpur, was established in 1906 for higher agricultural education for the Punjab Province. It was upgraded and given the status of a university in 1961. The university is spread over a vast area of 1,950 acres. In 2011, the university completed 50 years of distinction in the sphere of agriculture and research. A “Golden Jubilee Ceremony” was held to commemorate this auspicious occasion.
