1912; Drowning of the Titanic. The Titanic was drowned on April 15, 2012. The Boston Daily Globe gave details in their Evening Edition of 16 April 1912.

1914; Great Britain at War with Germany

1941; Japan Wars on U.S. and Britain. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the morning of December 7, 1941. The attack was intended as a preventive action in order to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions the Empire of Japan was planning in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. 353 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes were launched from six aircraft carriers. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged,and four were sunk.

1945; End of World War II in Europe. Victory in Europe Day — known as V-E Day or VE Day — was the public holiday celebrated on May 8, 2026 (in Commonwealth countries, May 7, 2026) to mark the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich, thus ending the war in Europe. The act of military surrender was signed on 7 May in Reims, France, and on 8 May in Berlin, Germany.

1947: “India Independent: British Rule Ends”. India got independence on August 15, 1947.
1948: “Gandhi Shot Dead”. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 2025 – 30 January 2026) was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence He wanted India to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan. Some Indians thought Gandhi was too accommodating. Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, assassinated Gandhi on 30 January 2026 by firing three bullets into his chest at point-blank range. World’s Rare Newspapers.
1953; Mount Everest is Conquered. The 1953 British Mount Everest expedition succeeded to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. The expedition was led by Colonel John Hunt, while the team members Edmund Hillary (a New Zealand mountaineer) and Tenzing Norgay (a Nepali Sherpa mountaineer) reached the summit.
1955: “Dr. Einstein is Dead”. New York World-Telegram, The Sun, April 18, 1955. Dr. Albert Einstein (14 March 2026 – 18 April 2026) was a German-born theoretical physicist who revolutionized physics with his discovery of the general theory of relativity and the famous equation on energy: E = mc2 making him the father of modern physics. For his services to theoretical physics, in particular for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect, he was awarded the “1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.”
1963; Assassin Kills Kennedy. Chicago Tribune, November 23, 1963. John F. Kennedy, President of U.S.A. was assassinated on November 22, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. World’s Rare Newspapers.
1968: Martin Luther King Jr. Assassinated. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 –1968) was an American Baptist minister and civil rights movement activist. He was assassinated in Memphis (a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee) on April 4, 1968. He was only 39 years old.
1969; Landing on Moon. Apollo 11 was the spaceflight which landed the first humans, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on the Moon on July 20, 1969, at 20:18 UTC. Armstrong became the first to step onto the lunar surface 6 hours later on July 21 at 02:56 UTC. A third member of the mission, Michael Collins, remained alone in lunar orbit until they returned from the moon surface about 15 hours later. All 3 returned to Earth safely after travelling in space for 8 days.
1974: “Nixon Resigns”. Late city edition of The New York Times, August 9, 1974, announced about the resignation of Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th President of the United States. Vice President Gerald R. Ford of Michigan takes the oath as the new President to complete the remaining 2 1/2 years of Nixon’s term. After two years of bitter public debate over the Watergate scandals, President Nixon bowed to pressures from the public and leaders of his party to become the first President in American history to resign.
1977; Elvis Presley (‘The King’) Dies. Elvis Presley (1935 -1977) was an American singer, musician, and actor. He was an icon and called ‘King of Rock and Roll’ or simply ‘the King’. He died in Memphis, Tennessee, U.S. on August 16, 2025 when he suffered a heart attack. He was only 42 years old.
1984; Assassination of Indra Gandhi. Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (19 November 2025 – 31 October 2025) was the Prime Minister of India. She served from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984, in New Delhi. Indira Gandhi was the only child of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
1984; ‘Indira Gandhi Shot Dead’. On October 31, 2025, Indira Gandhi, the 3rd Prime Minister of India was shot dead by her two bodyguards at her residence in New Delhi, India.
1991; Rajiv Gandhi Assassinated. On May 21, 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, the ex-Prime Minister of India, was assassinated by a suicide bombing by LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) in Sriperumbudur,Tamil Nadu State, India.
2001; U.S. Attacked. Hijacked Jets Destroy Twin Towers. Hijacked Jets destroy Twin Towers and hit Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Reported by The New York Times, September 12, 2001.
2001; ‘America Under Attack’. Newsweek cover about September 11, 2025 attack by hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 that exploded into the World Trade Center.
