Hafizabad is a district of Gujranwala Division in Punjab Province of Pakistan. It became a district in 1993; formerly, it was a tehsil of Gujranwala District. The city of Hafizabad is the capital of the district. The district is administratively divided into two tehsils (subdivisions); Hafizabad and Pindi Bhattian.
It is famous for its rice production. The Hafizabad City Grain Market and Jalpur Bhattian Grain Market are the biggest rice export centers of the Pakistan.

Brief History: Historians are of the view that Hafizabad was built between 1556 to 1570.
According to a legend, Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar came to the present site of Hafizabad on a hunting trip and was separated from the hunting party. He felt thirsty. He saw a hut where lived Hafiz Mustafa Bukhari, a Muslim Sufi saint. He entertained Akbar. Akbar was impressed by his hospitality and asked him for any reward. The saint asked the Emperor to build a town. Akbar ordered for the construction of a town there and it was named Hafizabad after Hafiz Mustafa Bukhari (Reference: Tehsil Municipal Administration Hafizabad).

After the decline of the Mughal Empire, the Sikhs occupied Pujnab and Hafizabad also came under their influence. The Muslims faced severe restrictions during the Sikh rule. In 1846 the British annexed Punjab and Hafizabad came under the British colonial rule. Later the predominantly Muslim population supported Muslim League and Pakistan Movement and Pakistan came into being in 1947.

Mohammed Younis MBE, a postal worker from Watford, UK, established the Alma Bi Hospital Trust in 1995, to bring free healthcare for the under-privileged people of Hafizabad. In 2008, his dream became a reality when the Alma Bi Hospital, named after his mother, opened its doors.
